AI Learns to Speedrun Mario

Artificial intelligence has once again proven its capabilities by mastering the art of speedrunning in the classic video game Super Mario Bros. Researchers from the University of California, Irvine have developed an AI system that can complete the game in record time, showcasing remarkable problem-solving and decision-making skills.

The AI was trained using reinforcement learning, a technique that involves providing rewards for desired behaviors. In this case, the AI was given feedback on how well it was performing in the game and was able to adjust its strategies accordingly. Over time, the AI was able to learn optimal paths and techniques for completing levels as quickly as possible.

With its ability to process vast amounts of data and make split-second decisions, the AI was able to achieve impressive speedrunning times that rival those of human players. This breakthrough demonstrates the potential for AI to excel in complex tasks that require quick thinking and adaptability.

While the AI’s speedrunning abilities are certainly impressive, researchers are excited about the broader implications of this technology. The same techniques used to train the AI for playing video games could be applied to real-world scenarios, such as optimizing traffic flow or improving healthcare services.

As AI continues to advance and push the boundaries of what is possible, it is clear that we are on the cusp of a new era in which intelligent machines will play an increasingly prominent role in our lives. The AI speedrunning Mario is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey into the future.

Got to train the ai to use a real controller as input by changing the electrical and only using visual information. A camera at the screen.

The Ai messes up less because the AI has eyes.

What i mean is the AI just uses the electric inputs of the controller by simply adjusting without physically pressing the button. However still uses the controller so the controller thinks there is a press.

So the Ai needs to be able to see at least at 60fps.

An image recognition ai that can analyze 60 images in a second. Or frames in this case.

The ai just makes adjustments to the controls using visual information.

So currently the AI will fail at any games where enemies and other things are randomized.

So it's not AI yet.

The ai has to see to know what's changing to react to the changes in time. A human is a billion times smarter and needs far less tries.

An ai should be able to try less than a human if the ai can calculate faster and do things the first try at least sometimes.

Humans can almost within milliseconds react to something changing in real life on or a display. Can be a sound or something we sense with our human sensors called senses.

A human brain needs no simulation to get better. Just more tries. We don't run simulations in our head to improve.

You are doing great stuff bro.
But, no kidding, why can't you train for all the levels.
You have the GPUs with you, all it costs is a little electricity 😅
Am I wrong??

How do my guy not know about the shortcuts? I know not everyone is a big fan of mario games but the pipes and going down them, is literally a staple of pop culture and gaming culture itself

How do you simulate a dopamine rush for AI?

In the beginning thats the fastest WARPLESS speedrun. The fastest non-warpless is 4 minutes and 53 seconds, way faster than without warp pipes.

I must have missed something from the way the ai goes out of it's way to kill enemies, im guessing it gets points when it manages to accidentally kills them lmao,
nice video
