In this chapter of our PyTorch tutorial series, we will dive into the practical aspect of loading data into our neural network models using PyTorch.

Hands-on with Data Loading

One of the key aspects of training deep learning models is efficiently loading and preprocessing data. In PyTorch, the torch.utils.data module provides useful classes and functions for data loading and manipulation.

To start with data loading, we first need to create a custom dataset class that inherits from torch.utils.data.Dataset. This custom dataset class should implement the __len__ and __getitem__ methods to specify the length of the dataset and how to retrieve individual samples from it.

Once we have defined our custom dataset class, we can use the torch.utils.data.DataLoader class to create an iterator that batches and shuffles our data for training the neural network. The DataLoader class also provides options for parallelizing data loading using multiple processes.

With data loading in place, we are now ready to build and train neural network models using PyTorch. The torch module provides tools for creating different types of neural network architectures such as feedforward networks, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), and more.
