Discussing the Conflict Between Ethiopia and Somalia Over Port Access

Posted by

Talk Africa is a popular talk show that focuses on various issues affecting the African continent. Recently, one of the main topics of discussion on the show has been the ongoing port row between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Ethiopia, a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa, heavily relies on access to the sea for its import and export activities. Due to this, the country has historically used ports in neighboring countries such as Djibouti, Eritrea, and most recently, Somalia.

However, tensions have been rising between Ethiopia and Somalia over the management of the port of Berbera. The port, which is situated in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, has been leased to a UAE-based company for development and operation. Ethiopia has also invested in the port, as it provides a crucial link for Ethiopian goods to be transported to and from the country.

The dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia has escalated in recent months, with Somalia announcing that it would ban Ethiopian khat exports through Berbera port. Khat is a plant native to East Africa that is chewed for its stimulant effects, and it forms a significant portion of Ethiopia’s exports.

The port row has raised concerns about the impact it will have on trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries. Many are worried that the dispute could lead to a deterioration in relations between Ethiopia and Somalia, as well as instability in the region.

Talk Africa has been providing a platform for experts, analysts, and policymakers to discuss the implications of the port row and possible solutions to the dispute. The show has highlighted the need for peaceful negotiations and diplomacy to resolve the issue and ensure that both countries can continue to benefit from the port of Berbera.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and find a mutually beneficial solution. Talk Africa will continue to monitor the developments in the Ethiopia-Somalia port row and provide insightful analysis on how the dispute can be resolved.

The only 2 African countries that are staunchly against somaliland's recognition are Uganda and egypt both ruled by a dictator. Ugandan troop are well paid in somalia and they receive wages that they can only dream of in uganda so they don't want the chaos in somalia to stop and egypt supports somalia for it's own interest because of river nile. Egypt always wants somalia to do it's bidding against Ethiopia just like in 1977 when Somalia invaded Ethiopia with the support of egypt

Please don’t talk about countries that you know nothing about. Your lack of knowledge in spite of your biased opinions makes Africans what the world says about Africa.

Ethiopia’s or African progress and development is hindered intentionally. Since the 1800 they blocked Ethiopian trade stopping Ethiopia not to use its own internal water which unfairly awarded disregarding Ethiopia by British awarded 10% to Sudan and 90% to Egypt. Can you imagine someone from Europe come and award your resources whatever it’s diamond, gold, gas or in Ethiopian case its water.

As many of you know Ethiopia have been suffering from drought wasn’t allow to use its internal water many millions of Ethiopian have died still dying.

Interns of having a port Assab was purely Ethiopian while Missawa was Eritrean but intentionally allocated to Eritrea to hinder Ethiopian growth. Remember Djibouti use to belong to Ethiopia but France colonized it at 100year agreement rather than returning to Ethiopia they told Djibouti to stay under France and be independent. This’s the work of European colonialism. They set the fire when the flame grows they point a finger and blame Africans. African leaders are corrupted they have become instrument of European divide and rule of poison. Until African get smart and get along to everybody’s win win situation, the problem will continue and civilian economy will suffer. Somalia doesn’t have a problem signing an agreement with Turkey or Egypt but have a problem with Ethiopia sign an agreement. This envy and rival the reason Africans suffers.

May god give us wisdom

No mention of the history of Somaliland and no invitations from Somalia and Somaliland. Somaliland became independent before Kenya Somaliland got it's independence in June 26 1960 where Ugadan got in 62 and Kenya 63 I'm here they are ignoring the history of Somaliland.

Great discussion with international legal repercussions mentioned by these gentlemen. What they failed to mention is that Somalia killed 200,000 individuals in the late 80's (the issue that pushed Somaliland to disassociate itself from Somalia). Somalia is a failed state in every aspect of statehood, while Somaliland is a democratically governed entity. This issue will come to fruition for both Somaliland & Ethiopia, and Somalia cannot do a damn thing about it.
