ECOWAS Summit held in Nigerian capital Abuja as West African leaders convene

Posted by

West African leaders from 15 member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have gathered in the Nigerian capital of Abuja for the 59th ECOWAS Summit. The summit, which began on June 22nd, 2021, is being hosted by President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria and is focused on discussing critical regional issues and finding solutions for economic, political, and security challenges facing the West African sub-region.

The ECOWAS Summit serves as a platform for leaders to come together to address pressing issues affecting the region and to foster cooperation and collaboration among member states. With the theme “Building a Secure and Integrated Region in the Midst of COVID-19,” this year’s summit is particularly significant as the global pandemic continues to have a profound impact on the West African region.

One of the key agenda items at the summit is the political situation in Mali, which has been marred by instability and a military coup in 2020. ECOWAS has been actively involved in mediating the political crisis in Mali and has imposed sanctions on the country’s military leaders to pressure them to return to civilian rule. During the summit, leaders will likely discuss the latest developments in Mali and explore ways to facilitate the return to democratic governance in the country.

In addition to Mali, the summit will address the security challenges in the Sahel region, including the ongoing threat of terrorism and insurgency. The Sahel region, which encompasses parts of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad, has been plagued by violence and instability, posing a serious threat to regional peace and stability. ECOWAS leaders will seek to strengthen cooperation and coordination in addressing the security challenges in the Sahel and explore ways to enhance the capabilities of the joint military force, G5 Sahel.

Another critical issue on the agenda is the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the West African region. The pandemic has caused significant disruptions to economies, trade, and livelihoods across the region, exacerbating existing challenges such as poverty and unemployment. As such, leaders will discuss ways to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic, including exploring opportunities for regional trade and investment, enhancing healthcare systems, and promoting sustainable development.

The ECOWAS Summit in Abuja provides an opportunity for West African leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation to address the complex and interconnected challenges facing the region. By working together, the leaders aim to find sustainable solutions that will promote peace, stability, and prosperity in West Africa.

As the summit concludes, the international community will be keenly observing the outcomes and decisions made by the ECOWAS leaders, as they have the potential to shape the future of the West African region and its relations with the rest of the world. The gathering of these leaders in Abuja highlights the importance of regional collaboration in addressing common challenges and advancing the collective interests of the West African people.

I don't want ECOWAS in sierra Leone their judgement on Niger mali and Burkina Faso makes me question their loyalty and intentions. Sierra Leone is a member of ECOWAS and ecomog. But if the sl APC rebels do advance in their attempts to rove president bio then Sierra Leone is also a member of the Mano river union with members guinea Liberia and ivory coast. I trust a democracy force from this union

They should ask why the population are backing those coup in Niger Mali and Burkina Faso. If Bazoum wasn’t arrested Mali wouldn’t have been able to take Kidal back.
Are those the kind of leaders africa needs?
Leaders that are willing to kill other Africans for the interest of their white owners.
This is non sense.
