Growing Garlic in Plastic Bottles with Water: A Guide to Producing Abundant Bulbs and Large Leaves

Posted by

Growing garlic in plastic bottles with water is a fun and exciting way to grow your own fresh garlic right at home. Not only does it save space, but it can also produce many bulbs with large leaves. In this tutorial, we will outline the steps you need to take in order to successfully grow garlic in plastic bottles with water.

Materials needed:
– Plastic bottles (preferably 2-liter bottles)
– Garlic cloves
– Water
– Potting soil
– Fertilizer
– Scissors or a knife
– A sunny spot

Step 1: Prepare the plastic bottles

Start by cleaning the plastic bottles thoroughly with soap and water. Remove any labels or stickers from the bottles. Using a pair of scissors or a knife, carefully cut off the top of the bottle, leaving about 1/3 of the bottle intact. This will serve as the planter for your garlic cloves.

Step 2: Prepare the garlic cloves

Separate the garlic cloves from the bulb, making sure to use only the largest and healthiest cloves. Leave the papery skin intact on each clove. If the cloves are small, you can use multiple cloves in one bottle to make up for it.

Step 3: Plant the garlic cloves

Fill the bottom of the plastic bottle with water, making sure not to overfill it. Place the garlic cloves in the water, ensuring that the bottom of the clove is submerged in water while the top is above the waterline. You can place multiple cloves in one bottle, spacing them out evenly to allow room for growth.

Step 4: Place in a sunny spot

Choose a sunny spot in your home or garden where your garlic plants will receive plenty of sunlight. Garlic plants thrive in full sun, so make sure to place the bottles in a location where they will get at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Step 5: Maintain the water level

Check the water level in the bottles regularly and make sure to top it up whenever it starts to run low. Garlic plants need to be kept consistently moist in order to grow healthy bulbs. Also, make sure to change the water every week or so to prevent the growth of algae or mold.

Step 6: Fertilize the plants

After a few weeks of growth, you can start fertilizing the garlic plants to encourage healthy growth. You can use a balanced liquid fertilizer or a diluted organic fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for how to properly apply it to your plants.

Step 7: Harvest the garlic

After a few months of growing, you will start to see the garlic bulbs forming in the bottles. Once the leaves begin to turn brown and dry out, it is time to harvest the garlic. Carefully remove the bulbs from the water and allow them to dry out completely before storing them in a cool, dark place.

By following these steps, you can successfully grow garlic in plastic bottles with water and enjoy fresh, homegrown garlic throughout the year. It’s a fun and rewarding project that can be done with minimal space and resources. Give it a try and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
