Run Windows apps on Linux – Tutorial with bottles (wine)
Running Windows applications on Linux has always been a challenge, but with the help of Bottles (formerly known as WineBottler), it has become much easier. Bottles is a free and open-source utility that allows you to run Windows applications on Linux without the need for a Windows installation.
Step 1: Install Bottles
The first step is to install Bottles on your Linux system. You can download the latest release from the official website or install it using your package manager. Once installed, you can launch Bottles and start creating “bottles” for your Windows applications.
Step 2: Create a bottle
Once you have Bottles installed, you can start creating “bottles” for your Windows applications. A bottle is a self-contained environment that simulates a Windows installation, allowing you to run Windows applications without interfering with your Linux system. You can create a new bottle from the Bottles interface and specify the Windows version and architecture for which the bottle will be configured.
Step 3: Install Windows applications
With your bottle created, you can now install your Windows applications. Simply select the bottle you want to use and click on the “Install” button to select the setup executable for your application. Bottles will then guide you through the installation process, and your Windows application will be ready to run on Linux.
Step 4: Run Windows applications
Once you have installed your Windows applications in a bottle, you can launch them just like any other Linux application. Bottles will handle the necessary compatibility and configuration settings to ensure that your Windows application runs smoothly on Linux.
Conclusion
With Bottles, running Windows applications on Linux has never been easier. Whether you need to use a specific Windows application for work or just want to explore the world of Windows software on Linux, Bottles provides a convenient and hassle-free solution. Give it a try and see how easy it is to run Windows apps on Linux!
