Israeli forces kill co-founder of ‘We Are Not Numbers’ and professor, Refaat Alareer

Posted by

Refaat Alareer, a beloved professor and co-founder of the grassroots organization ‘We Are Not Numbers’, was tragically killed by Israeli forces during a recent escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip. The news of his untimely death has sent shockwaves through the community, as Alareer was not only an academic and a writer, but also a passionate advocate for justice and peace in Palestine.

As a professor of English literature at the Islamic University of Gaza, Alareer was deeply committed to educating and empowering his students. He was known for his dedication to fostering critical thinking and intellectual curiosity, and was a beloved mentor to many. His work extended beyond the classroom, as he co-founded the organization ‘We Are Not Numbers’ to amplify the voices of young Palestinians and offer them a platform to share their stories with the world.

“We Are Not Numbers” was a project that aimed to provide a humanizing counter-narrative to the dehumanization of Palestinians in the media. Through writing, photography, and other forms of creative expression, the organization gave a voice to those whose stories had been rendered invisible by the ongoing conflict. Alareer was a driving force behind this initiative, and his commitment to elevating the voices of marginalized communities was unwavering.

Tragically, Alareer’s life was cut short during the recent violence in Gaza. As Israeli forces launched airstrikes in response to rocket fire from Palestinian militant groups, Alareer found himself caught in the crossfire. His death is a painful reminder of the human toll of the ongoing conflict in the region, and a sobering testament to the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution.

In the wake of Alareer’s passing, an outpouring of grief and support has emerged from around the world. Colleagues, students, and friends have spoken of his kindness, his passion for justice, and his unwavering commitment to his community. His impact as an educator and an advocate will be felt for generations to come, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who strive for a more just and equitable world.

As we mourn the loss of Refaat Alareer, we also honor his memory by continuing the important work that he dedicated his life to. We must amplify the voices of those who are too often silenced, and work towards a future where peace, dignity, and justice are the birthright of all people. Though his voice may no longer be with us, his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were touched by his kindness, his wisdom, and his unwavering commitment to the cause of justice.

A martyr never dies. He becomes immortal. The world remembers his memories and his words. Future generations get lights. He was a teacher and a poet. Only cruel people could be enmity with such a person. He always, lived, revived in the hearts of coming generations.

Helpless nothing to lose….I have seen war on Gaza before,but I have never felt the pain I am feeling now,may be it's because I have aged and because I know more about the plight of the Palestinians…..all I can do is support the boycott and I am ashamed to say I can't actually go out into the streets and protest,but everyday from the start of this onslaught much of the humans hear your cries,pray for your suffering to end.. Palestinians are not going to just disappear,I wish with all my heart for a free Palestine

If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze—
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself—
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up
above
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love
If I must die
let it bring hope
let it be a tale.

As an American who has voted for Democrats for years, I feel ashamed. How was this cruelty and torture carried out in front of the eyes of the whole world for years? and still can't be stopped…How did we leave babies in incubators to die? Now we are learning some of what is happening in Gaza, what about the past? Years of oppression…😢
