Reacting to Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012) for the First Time | Movie Review

Posted by

Django Unchained is a 2012 American revisionist Western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a freed slave who teams up with a German bounty hunter (played by Christoph Waltz) to rescue his wife from a ruthless plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). The film also features memorable performances by Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Don Johnson.

As someone watching Django Unchained for the first time, you are in for an unforgettable cinematic experience. Tarantino is known for his unique storytelling style, which combines elements of spaghetti Westerns, Blaxploitation films, and revenge thrillers. Django Unchained is no exception, delivering a mix of dark humor, intense violence, and powerful themes that will leave a lasting impact on you.

The film opens with a powerful scene where Django is freed by Dr. King Schultz (Waltz), a charming bounty hunter who recruits him to help track down a trio of dangerous outlaws. As Django proves his worth as a sharpshooter, he and Schultz form a partnership that leads them to the ruthless Candie plantation, where Django’s wife Broomhilda (Washington) is held captive.

One of the most striking aspects of Django Unchained is its unflinching portrayal of the brutality of slavery in the antebellum South. Tarantino doesn’t shy away from depicting the horrors endured by slaves, from brutal beatings to sexual exploitation. This raw and honest depiction adds weight to Django’s quest for justice and redemption, as he seeks to overcome the legacy of slavery and reclaim his humanity.

At the same time, Django Unchained is a thrilling and entertaining film, with Tarantino’s trademark wit and visual flair on full display. The dialogue crackles with sharp exchanges, the action is fast-paced and exhilarating, and the soundtrack is a vibrant blend of classic Western tunes and hip-hop beats. The performances are top-notch, with Foxx and Waltz delivering nuanced portrayals of their complex characters, and DiCaprio and Jackson shining as the charismatic villains.

As you watch Django Unchained unfold, you will likely find yourself drawn into the world Tarantino has created, rooting for Django as he faces off against racism, injustice, and evil. The film’s climax is a tense and explosive showdown at the Candie plantation, where Django confronts his enemies and fights to save his wife. The resolution is both satisfying and bittersweet, leaving you with a mix of emotions that will linger long after the credits roll.

In conclusion, Django Unchained is a powerful and thought-provoking film that showcases Tarantino’s talent as a filmmaker and storyteller. It is a movie that demands your attention and rewards repeated viewings, as you discover new layers of meaning and complexity with each watch. If you are a fan of Westerns, revenge thrillers, or Tarantino’s work in general, Django Unchained is a must-see film that will leave a lasting impression on you. So sit back, buckle up, and prepare to be blown away by this unforgettable cinematic journey.

This great movie had about 5% of the horrors that the 400 year slave trade was.

The thing is though, it is real. Like all this kind of stuff happened, and Quentin got a lot of praise from the black community for this movie.

Blows my mind that some people look at this movie and think Tarantino is racist. Like, you think the guy that made a movie depicting the horror of slavery and a freed man's victory over a disgusting slaver is racist? The movie that depict Klan members as a bunch of morons?

(I'm not saying that as if you guys think tyat, just something I see online that blows my mind.)

Well, we white people have once again shown why we claim to be the greatest. This greedy plantation owner who "puts up" with a free ex-slave for the money, albeit reluctantly. The "courageous" group of future KKK members, each dumber than the other, but united in the firm belief that they are better. Steven the actual spirit rector. The Candy's are completely united in the "elegance" and "intelligence" of the south. I'm German and I'm glad that the German Schultz (Austrian in real life) doesn't flit through the picture with constant goose-stepping. No, the bad guys are home-grown here, an American homegrown product. An outstanding film with outstanding actors.
