The Impact of the Israel-Hamas Conflict on the Middle East | Perspectives from Lisa Anderson, Salam Fayyad, & Amos Yadlin

Posted by

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has once again escalated in recent weeks, with both sides engaging in intense and deadly fighting. While the immediate focus is on the devastating impact within Gaza and Israel, the repercussions of this conflict are also shaping the broader geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.

The Israel-Hamas war has not only reignited old tensions and conflicts in the region but has also highlighted new alliances and shifts in the power dynamics of the Middle East. In a recent discussion with experts Lisa Anderson, Salam Fayyad, and Amos Yadlin, the following key points were raised about the ways in which the Israel-Hamas war is reshaping the Middle East.

Lisa Anderson, a political scientist and former president of the American University in Cairo, notes that the ongoing conflict has brought to the forefront the complex and fraught relationship between Israel and the Arab world. The recent normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab states, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan, have shown a willingness among some Arab countries to seek closer ties with Israel. However, the current conflict has put strains on these relationships, with public opinion in these countries increasingly critical of Israel’s actions.

Salam Fayyad, the former Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, expressed concern about the impact of the conflict on the Palestinian people, particularly those living in Gaza. He emphasized the urgent need for a political solution that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict and provides for the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. Fayyad also highlighted the important role of the international community in supporting efforts to de-escalate the conflict and work towards a lasting peace in the region.

Amos Yadlin, a retired major general in the Israel Defense Forces and former head of the Israeli military intelligence directorate, discussed the strategic implications of the conflict for Israel. He noted that while the Israel Defense Forces have sought to degrade Hamas’ military capabilities, the conflict has also raised concerns about the vulnerability of Israel’s cities to rocket attacks. Yadlin emphasized the need for both military and diplomatic efforts to address the threats posed by Hamas and other militant groups in the region.

The Israel-Hamas conflict has also highlighted broader geopolitical shifts in the Middle East, with the traditional fault lines between Arab states and Israel showing signs of shifting. As the conflict continues to unfold, it is clear that the impact of this war goes beyond the immediate casualties and destruction in Gaza and Israel. The long-term consequences of this conflict will continue to shape the dynamics of the Middle East and the prospects for peace and stability in the region.

But Bibi Mileikowsky financed Hamas. Why "dismantle Hamas" on Oct 7th, when you were giving them money on Oct 6th?

This whole situation STINKS! And the smell are the corpses of INNOCENT Arabs and Israelis who have died because Prime Minister Mileikowsky wants to play "3 dimensional chess" with Hamas. And it blew up in his damned face! Now 19,000 Gazans (mostly women and children) have to be sacrificed at the alter so that Bibi can save his legacy. SMH #RememberAmalek

Thank you for airing this was really useful. One of the best dialogue on this topic that I have heard, hands down.

Isaraelis, Amos, don't view Gaza as a neighboring state, but as an Iranian proxy, determined on eliminating the country and, therefore, your crazy left-wing policies got us to where we are. You're not relevant anymore and can't be trusted.

Bibi wanted Palestine to remain divided. He did not want Palestine to ever be united. He stated it! And that is why Hamas was able to keep the monies flowing in, and eventually attack Israel. They knew Hamas are regarded as Terrorist, cannot negotiate with terrorist, keep them in power. Let the monies flow in. Never allow chance to negotiate. Perfect.

Interesting to hear the views. The General doesn't have a firm grasp of WWII history or current assessment of US forays into Middle East or Afghanistan. It appears that many countries, chiefly Israel, US and some neighbors lost interest in a Palestinian state and left the issue to Israel which did everything it could, within certain parameters, to frustrate that aspiration wherever it could. Think Ireland. And bear in mind no country has invincible security as Israel clearly thought it achieved. The US hasn't articulated a clear vision for the future or its justification for its conduct in its present wars.

Why can't Professor Salam Fayyed lead the PA? The propaganda says there are no able and credible leaders on Palestinian side but that simply doesnt appear to be the case.

The one problem that I see with Israels current position in relation to the October 7th attacks is that there is precious little acknowledgement of the long and twisted history of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Add to that Netanyahu's long hidden financial support of Hama's to the detriment of the Palestinian Authority, who acknowledges Israels right to exist, however are demanding a 2 State solution, which hard right religious fanatics in Israel refuse to support. Whilst Israel continues to play innocent victim with no acknowledgement of how Israels refusal to work towards to a satisfactory solution to Palestinians having their own freedom of self determination, paved the way for the October 7th attacks. As an American, they don't have my support and I see their current actions in Gaza as just throwing much more fuel on the fire of extending the conflict.

What not mentioned in American mainstream news is yesterday also, Israeli soldiers in Gaza went into UN school where people taking refuge, shot children execution style, and took all the men away to unknown location.

After shootings stop, some mothers went back to look for their children, only to witness what happened. Luckily a reporter was among them to record the monstrosity of what taken place.

Realized it was a mistake to leave crime scene intact, Israeli soldiers then blew up the school.

There is no way 1.5 billion Muslims will ever forget what Israel did in Gaza.

Israel is on borrowed time. The first jihad call will see tens of millions converging on Israel.
Its life will not surpass the extinct 100 year old crusader kingdoms. You better hope US does not go down with it.

Not the most productive of discussions, unlike 99.9% of those previously featured on this channel. But how could it be? The international reaction is tainted by the nature of who is fighting this war, and any possibility of a two-state solution ended on October 7th. In fairness, it was slim prospect beforehand. The only beneficiary here is Putin who might well see this as the best 71th birthday present imaginable.

Do political accommodations produce a stable peace in the middle east? Or do facts on the ground and deterrence produce periods of temporary calm? What produced the calm in northern Israel between 2006 and today? Would you really expect Hamas to honor any agreements it made with Israel? At this point would you expect Israel to trust such agreements?

Lol, put on channel 14 in Israel and get an idea of why Amos Yadlin is acknowledged by Israelis as one of the men with flawed thinking most responsible for putting Israel in this situation.
